Just Around!

Picked more raspberries this week.  Probably won't get anymore now.  Had our first frost last night!

The garden is put to bed for the winter.  I didn't know what I was doing when I planted that asparagus.  Now it shades the bed behind it so I can't plant a lot there.  Boo hoo!  I sure do love eating the asparagus in the spring though!

The roses are still giving us some color.  Knock Out roses are the best!!!

We brought the fountain into the garage.  Looks rather bare but ready for winter!  I think the dark mulch must be from my shadow.

This is spearmint and lemon balm (mostly spearmint) growing in a wooden pot by the deck.  I wonder if I should be cutting that back for the winter????

And last but not least this is Coco eating!  She gobbles up her food so fast so I spread it on the floor, some in her dish and some in the muffin tin.  The vet's technician said to put it in the muffin tin to slow her down.  And yes, those are little pieces of chopped carrots along with her food!  If I gave her the whole carrot it would be gone in a few seconds.  This slows her down.  She stands by me and cries while I cut up the carrot.  Guess I am not fast enough.  Am I crazy or is she!  Don't answer!!!!!

I thought only Labs had that crazy habit of gulping food. I divide our dog's food into 2 dishes and for some reason he goes back and forth eating from first one then the other a couple of times so it does slow him down. Someone recommended putting a stainless steel ball in with his food to slow him down but I'd be afraid he'd eat that too!

I tried to pick up my potted Mint this week and found that it had put roots through the drain hole and was actually growing on the ground. I am cutting it down for winter. I hope that's the right thing to do. My Lemon Balm is in a very dry area and doesn't go crazy like it would in a damp, more fertile place. It does self seed though.

I used to have a tea garden and grew several kinds of mint. I will tell you a couple of things about mint that I know. first of all, they said to plant it in pots and plant the entire pot in the ground or it would take over everything and one would dominate the rest. I had several kinds in my garden including lemon balm. Well the mint jumped the pots and grew all over each other and it just became a big minty mess! So now I put it in a pot on the Bakers rack and if it dies I buy more the next year. However we do have some growing in different places on our farm but it is not close to each other. They require no maintenance at all. I never would cut it down, or do anything to it, and it always came up the next year. I live in zone five though, I don't know if it's the same for what ever zone you live in.

Ps. I forgot to mention there is a campground in Brown county state park! You just reminded me with your comment on my blog.

Hi Granny Marigold, Maybe I should try two dog dishes although the muffin pan and her dish is sort of like that. I kind of think that not much will slow her down. I would be afraid to try putting the ball in too. wouldn't want to take any chances of her swallowing it! I am not sure yet what I will do about the mint. Thanks for the info on how you do it. Nancy

Hi Bee Lady, Thanks for visiting and the information on the mint. I wish I would have kept just one kind of mint in the wooden pot as I think there is not much lemon balm mixed in and that is the one I like best. We have driven through the Brown county state park once but no longer have our fifth-wheel. Thinking about visiting Nashville soon though!!! Thanks for all the info on your blog about it!! Nancy

Those berries look so good. Frost here too last few nights, but we didn't have anything to worry about, everything gone. Just cleaning all the beds up.

Hi Betty from My Irish cottage Home, Same here! Beds are cleaned up but still some weeds among the flowers and things need rearranged. It might wait till next spring I am thinking! We are in zone 5. Nancy

Frost already ... oh my. We are have cooler days, but nothing that looks like winter yet. October and November here in Texas is usually really nice. Glad you are still getting a few berries.

Hi Nancy! Sometimes when we are planting, we may not realize the size and/or permanancy of the plant. We live and we learn. I wouldn't worry about the asparagus. Enjoy it when it's around. Love those raspberries! What will coco do when she can't dig in your garden? Have a nice week! Blessings from Bama!

Your asparagus is so pretty. I had really planned to start a row this spring and never did. We love asparagus! We've just had our first frost and freeze too, which finished off the garden. I thought you were going to say Coco scattered that food on the floor. Eli makes the biggest mess eating. He actually does get the food all over the floor, but little Weetie is our vacuum. She goes behind Eli eating each piece that he drops.

Hi Betty, So nice to get it all tidied up but then I have to remember how much I will miss those fresh veggies! Nancy

Hi Audrey, Yes, frost here but not real cold yet. Those days are coming though. I guess there is no perfect place to live for the weather! Nancy

Hi Felecia, I sure do enjoy the asparagus but hubby doesn't. It is worth it to me to not be able to grow a lot in the bed behind it. I guess no garden is perfect. At least mine isn't!! Nancy

Hi Henny Penny, Yes, that asparagus sure is nice but I should have researched a little before I planted it. I was afraid it wouldn't grow so planted it in three places. They all grew. One was planted outside the garden fence and Coco kept eating it so we dog that one up! Eli, Weetie and Coco are quite the characters, aren't they! Nancy

Hi Audrey, Answered you comment but must have forgotten to push the publish button! Oh, me! I think the berries are done. Haven't checked the past couple of days. Nice to have things all tidied up but I sure will miss the veggies!! Nancy

Coco is a hoot. And I have to say I'm glad your asparagus is doing so well. At least you've got it!

Hi Leigh, Yes, Coco is a character but keeps our life interesting since we don't have goats or chickens! I just wish I would have planted smarter on the asparagus! Nancy

Next year I must plant a Knock-out Rose. They're stunning. What is it about some doga (well, most maybe) that causes them to inhale their food, like little pigs? Meal time is such a funny time with animals. Raspberries are my absolute favorite fruit. Oh, I can just taste your delicious berries now. xo

Hi A Joyful Cottage! We tried the other kind of Roses but found we did not want to have to deal with all the work of them. Hope you do try some! I feel bad that my little Coco gobbles her food up! Afraid I have to wait till next year for berries now! Thanks for stopping by! Nancy

Stopped by to say hi and thanks for stopping by at my blog today. I love all your gardens and vegies....I would love to get something growing instead of tomatoes. I have too much shade in my backyard. So the tomatoes grow along the sides where the sun in. I have got a lot of mint in my front yard which has taken over completely....oh well, lots of mint tea to drink.

Hi cards4ubylouise, Thanks and Thanks you for commenting! I think I have a little too much shade in certain areas of my garden too. I should have planned ahead better but what is done is done! Hope you will visit again! Nancy
