Happenings in Garden and Home this Week!

Monday this was picked!  If I can keep my lettuces going for salads for awhile yet I will be one happy girl!  My radishes are puny but they still count as radishes, don't they! lol

Found this large thing in the yard!!  Must have been two or three inches long.  I thought it looked to big for a grasshopper.  What is it???????  Yikes!

When the frost was predicted my "wonderful gardener" brought my pot of cherry tomatoes up by the pergola and sat it on the potting bench.  We covered it with a sheet but the frost got it anway! Boo hoo!  The little tomatoes were all falling off so I brought some into the house.  They were sticky and most of them were no good anyway. Double Boo Hoo!!!

Wednesday some greens were harvested, a couple sugar peas and just a few raspberries.  We welcome even a little of them!

The Clematis survived the freeze!

The grape vines did not survive!  Mike did not get very many grapes from his vine this year.  For some reason he got just a few ripe ones and there were more completly green ones on the vine.  Never had that happen before!  No canned grape juice this year!

Friday I harvested two nice carrots, four sugar peas , one pak choi leaf and some greens for my salad.  Is it too late for me to plant more spinach and lettuces in my little cold frame???

A bowl of greens was picked on Saturday with a few sugar peas.  That was it for last week's harvest!  A little is better than nothing!  Right?

Praying Mantis--one of the GOOD guys! You should be happy to have a visitor like that.

nice selection of greens, and your bug is a praying mantis - you want to have them in the garden as they eat other bugs so they're benefitian to your plants.

Hi Dorothy-Life with Boys, You are right. I should have gotten out my bug book sooner! I didn't think they were that large tho. Thanks for visiting and I hope you will visit again! Nancy

Hi Sue, Thanks for the info. I thought I had read that praying mantis was a good bug but bloggers told me what it was I got out my bug book and found out they eat butterflies and other good insects too! Thanks for visiting and hope you will come again! Nancy

Hi Jenny, Thanks for the info. I am wondering if I want them in my garden as when I got out my bug book it said they can eat butterflies and other beneficial insects? I am also afraid our little Coco might try to get it and get hurt. What do you think? Hope you will come again! Nancy

I always stick a praying mantis right in what ever bed has the most bug problems. I hope your garden keeps on putting out stuff as long As possible. This time of year always seems like such a drag when there isn't much left to be harvested! I got a nice pile of raspberries today too!

Hi Shawn Ann, We got rid of the praying mantis. I wonder if I will have more next year as it was pretty big! This is the first one I have seen here. My raspberries are done! Will miss all the good things from the garden come winter. Canned and frozen just not as tasty as fresh. Thanks for visiting! Come again! Nancy

Hi Cheryl, Sorry I missed seeing your comment earlier! About all that I will be getting from my garden this next week will probably only be greens. I hope I can keep them going! Thanks for visiting! Come again! Nancy

Lucky you having some praying mantis in your garden. They are definitely a good bug and so interesting to look at too.

The lettuce looks crisp and yummy!

Hi nutmeg gardener! Thanks. Probably lettuce and carrots will be the only things I will be harvesting now. Will definitely miss all those good veggies and raspberries! Thanks for visiting! Come again! Nancy

Hi kitsapFG, We will enjoy the lettuce for awhile longer yet! Not sure if the praying mantis is a good thing here or not because of the dog and I read they eat butterflies. Thanks for visiting and come again! Nancy

Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for your input! You would think I would have been familiar with a praying mantis by my age! Come again! Nancy
