Report of Harvest or Not! and Food!

The snow is gone but it is still c-o-l-d!  I looked inside my cold frame today and things are still living but sure not growing!  Still hoping when it warms up that they will.

This lettuce was growing just under a plastic box.   It made it through the cold and snow also.  Happy about that!

I had two little carrots still growing in the cold frame so pulled one out today!  5/8 oz.  I think we would not have to worry about our weight if we had to live on what I grew during the winter months!!!!

We do not like "hot" things to eat.  I found a recipe for a mild taco mix so made some up.  Love mixes you can make up ahead to sit on  the shelf!  I will try it this week in some Taco Soup.

It is a good thing that in the winter I don't have to depend on things that I can grow fresh.  For our meal tonight I pulled chicken strata out of the freezer and there are pickled beets, freezer cold slaw and frozen squash to add to the meal.

Two of my favorite people (Coco thinks she is a person) enjoying a little together time before the gardening season starts!

your greens look like they are doing great. They may be slow but they still look good. I hope you recipe for taco seasoning turns out great!
I know what you mean about surviving off your home grown during the winter. It is tough. I know I wouldn't survive, but I get a little better at storing things each year.
My family has always loved spaniels, we always had them growing up, but for some reason the grandparents have switched over to little runty dogs.
Oh and we are in zone 6a

Hi Shawn Ann, We love cocker spaniels but not the price to have them groomed! Since you are in zone 6a do you use a cold frame or green house to grow your broccoli? We are in zone 5 but I don't know if it is a or b. Thanks for visiting! Nancy

If we had to eat only fresh food items from the garden during winter we would starve too, but all that bounty in storage, frozen, and canned keeps us nicely filled out. :D

Your cold frame crops are looking just as they ought to. As the day length and sun strength continues you will see them suddenly start taking off with new growth.

Hi Nancy - Oh I hope you have better success with this new taco mix. Let us all know how you like it. Your greens look like they are doing great, slow, but great. As soon as you get a bit more warmth they will really take off.

I used to mix up taco mix too (before my nightshade issues). I liked doing it that way much better. We never made exactly a pound of hamburger that the premade mixes wanted. And you could tailor the mix to your tastes.

Hi kitsapFG, Thanks for encouragement on the greens growing in the cold frames. Perhaps I will get some harvest from them yet! I wish I would have grown more snow peas to freeze. I love them. Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Hi Daphne, Thanks for that advice. I didn't think about tailoring the mix to suit the amount of meat I cook! Glad you could stop by! Nancy

It is nice to have produce from the summer garden canned/frozen and ready to use in the winter time. Homemade mixes sure do taste better.

Have a wonderful day.

Seems amazing to me you're harvesting anything at all in the dead of winter up your way! We've said many times it's a good thing we don't have to 'depend' on our garden not only due to quantity, but it'd be kind of boring eating after a while.
P.S. I'd never heard of freezer slaw until you spoke of it in previous posts, and wanting an easy after-church meal of baked beans, slaw and hot dogs last month, remembered your 'freezer slaw', googled some recipes.... and wow, so delicious and perfect with our meal. What a great way to prepare 'fast food' ahead of time. Thank you.

Hi Cheryl, I am hoping to preserve as much produce as possible this summer. Yummy and healthy. I made Taco Soup with the taco mix and will try it tonight. Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Hi Lisa, I am glad that you liked the freezer cole slaw! My hubby loves it and it is a good way to preserve cabbage if you grow it or if it is cheap in the stores. Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Wonderful that you have some growing things! I'm sure when the daylight lengthens a bit that lettuce will take off!

Hi nutmeg gardener, I didn't know if thins would survive just under the plastic boxes but so far so good! February is a impatient time of year for me! Thanks for visiting! Nancy

I'm impressed you can grow anything at all in winter! Ours are so cold and so much snow, even the cold frames can't be used till late March.

Progress in the Courtyard!

It was so nice to look out my bedroom window this morning and see the Clematis blooming instead of a pile of snow.  It is a rainy day agai...
