Courtyard Garden May 24,2018

Most of my courtyard garden survived the winter.  This is the path to the arbor.  Now it has to survive the summer with Coco!

The path through the courtyard from one end to the other is filling in nicely.

There were three of these Asiatic Lilies that came back but see that little nubbin in the front of one of them?  Yep!  Coco ate it to the ground so we dug it up and planted something else there because once she had eaten one she would be back for the other two.

This is a new planter I am trying out this year that I bought from Aldi's.

This raised bed on legs of strawberries survived the winter quite well.  I do think it is a good thing that we wrapped plastic around the bottom before winter to keep the roots from freezing.

I tied some string to this frame that held up the protective cover and the sugar peas are doing well growing up it.  Those are green onions in the front of them.

Provider Beans and Parsley.

My beans were doing so well and then they get this.  They shrivel up and die.  I had the same problem last year but this is in a different bed.  Can anyone tell me what the problem is and what to do?  I tried Neem but it didn't help.  Poor Coco!  I won't be able to grow beans for her!  If I can't grow green beans maybe I will try corn next year!  I have seen it grown in those plastic totes!

These are the yard long beans i started in the house.  They weren't doing well so I set them out and they did worse!  I don't know if they will make it or not but planted another one behind it and one on the side.  That is a Hollyhock beside it on the ground.  Came back from last year and hoping it will bloom this year!

My Mother's Day hanging asparagus and the potting bench showing is full of pots with things planted in them.

This pretty pot held a Clematis we bought and planted.  It had the stick stapled or nailed in so I planted a couple climbing yellow beans.  It is older seed but Heirloom seed so I am hoping it will grow so that I can try and save the seeds.  Maybe I will be more successful growing yellow beans instead of green beans do you
think?  It sits on top of the potting bench with the other pots safe from Coco!

These pots are set on the ground in front of the potting bench.  I don't know if they will have to be moved higher from Coco.  I know she doesn't like lettuce!

"Wonderful Gardener" painted this chair to match my other things so I could get my pepper plant up a little higher from Coco.  Another Pepper plant on the right and flowers on the left.

Two of my caged tomato plants!  There are two more on the front porch.  I have two red cherry tomatoes that Chris sent me the seeds for.  One Sungold I bought and one Rutger I bought.

A pot of lettuce I have been eating from.  I think it is Red Sails Lettuce and I bought the seed from MIgardener.

My beautiful Iris that I bought last year.  Hoping it will multiply so that I have a nice little patch there.

The climbing rose came back and also the knock out one we planted but the one under the arbor did not make it.  I don't think it got enough water in the winter or light.

My lemon balm came back under the arbor.  Because this is not ideal growing conditions I am hoping to keep it under control!

I have enticed a few birds into my yard.  The right one is for goldfinches and they have been there a few times.  The one on the left a few sparrows have visited and a cardinal has visited and checked out our yard! We have houses behind us and a long path coming into the courtyard so wasn't sure if any would find us.  I have a hummingbird feeder not up.  I wonder if they could find me.

The Clematis we recently planted.  Bachelor buttons planted from seed in the box.  Raspberry bushes on the right.

My favorite place to sit under the porch to view my little bit of Paradise!!

Our great granddaughter Nora, must be making something quite spicey for lunch!  Wish I could sit like that!!

Poor Coco.  Nora has not learned how to pet dogs yet and clunked her on the head before I could stop her.  Now she is not only jealous of the attention we give Nora but now afraid of her and hiding behind me on the left!

A small harvest but it is a start!

My beautiful two-colored rose that "wonderful gardener" brought me.  I just love the two colors together.  I am tired of posting and you are probably tired of reading so will be off to take my nap!  Have a wonderful week!!

The garden is doing great. very pretty pictures.
On the beans it almost looks like sun scald - but it's hard to tell. I didn't do beans last year or this because of that.
Beautiful

Hi Cheryl, I wonder if it is sun scald. We go from hot to colder so I am not sure. It does get discouraging trying to beat all the things that can go wrong! Thanks. Nancy

I've never seen bean leaves affected like yours are so have no ideas. It's sad when plants don't flourish but then others surprise us and do better than we'd hoped. Guess we just have to accept it. ( Easier said than done).
Coco sure can get into trouble! Bracken has been eating things he shouldn't and of course he has to throw up. Yuck. Lately I'm trying to watch him when he's outside to make sure he's not up to mischief. You'd think at almost 10 years old he'd have more sense.

Your garden is looking wonderful! All of those lovely things growing. I wouldn’t have the first idea of what to do. Something ate all of my green beans three years in a row and I finally gave up planting them. Now it’s just marigolds in that bed!
Poor Coco. It’s hard being a dog when there are littles around who don’t know how to play nice yet. :-). Nora will learn and then they’ll be great friends.
Blessings,
Betsy

Your garden is looking fantastic! Makes me wish I had one!! Especially the veggies... Coco and Nora will be good friends soon I am sure :) She is getting big, but still very cute! xx

Your courtyard garden is doing wonderfully!!! I lost FIVE rosebushes this winter, I guess I'm giving up on roses except for those that are still surviving. How sad, I do love roses so much! How funny that Coco eats your garden - what a little crackpot! I had a critter eat one of my Casablanca Lilies down to a stub early on, and I had hoped it would bounce back but sadly it doesn't seem to be. I wonder if it will come back next year? I am considering adding more as I love them so much - they are so dramatic in the perennial bed and their scent is pure heaven! Happy Holiday Weekend!!

Nice little harvest Nancy :) Your lettuce looks great by the way. Coco is funny, you have to keep an eye on that rascal lol...the green beans I started indoors are kind of looking choppy, and they've been INDOORS...I don't think we have any kind of insect in the house that could be eating them, and funny, the yellow beans look just fine. I still transplanted them outside and I'm going to hope for the best! Your strawberries look great!

What lovely things you have in your garden, I loved the rose. It can be difficult to grow them in areas of extreme temperature I think.
I cant believe that your cat eats your garden!!

You have so much happening in your little bit of paradise & everything looks wonderful! I'm so glad that so many things made it through winter. I bet your plants will be even better this year with many more blooms and yummy goodies now that you have a year under your belt at your new house. As for the bean, I'm sorry but I have no idea what that could be - hopefully someone else can give you some help on that. Have a wonderful weekend, Nancy :)

Hi Granny Marigold, Well Bracken is not alone. Coco is 12 years old and doesn't have a lot of sense but to eat everything! Today I cut some of the bad leaves off the beans and covered with cheese cloth in case it is sunscald. My last hope to save them I guess! Nancy

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Betsy, I wonder if my beans have sunscald so covered them for awhile today with cheesecloth and will continue to see if it helps. I may have to give up growing beans too! Coco is not use to be treated unkindly even though Nora didn't know better. Not sure if Coco will forget by the time she comes over again or not. Have a good Memorial Day week-end! Nancy

Hi Joy from Days Filled With Joys, I think you could grow lettuce in a pot almost anywhere. That is if you stayed in one place long enough! LOL Oh, well you have more time to sew without a garden! I guess we are prejudice when it comes to Nora! Nancy

Hi Debbie at Mountain Mama, I am sorry you lost so many rosebushes. I wonder why when we moved in that they planted that rosebush we lost under the Arbor with hardly any sun! We should have moved it! It is really a challenge gardening with Coco but we love her! Have a great Memorial Day! Nancy

Hi Rain Thanks! I hope your green beans turn out okay. I put cheese cloth over mine today in case it was sunscald. If that doesn't help I don't know what will. We don't get a lot of strawberries from a 4x4 foot bed but it is so nice to go out and pick a few now and then. Have a great week-end! Nancy

Hi Elizabethd, Thanks! Coco is our dog and yep she eats almost anything. I have found she doesn't like lettuce! It is a challenge gardening with her. Have a wonderful Memorial Day week-end! Nancy

Hi Margaret, Thanks! I do hope my beans straighten up! I put cheese cloth over them for awhile today in case it is sunscald. I hope your large garden is doing well. Have a nice Memorial Day! Nancy

Your gardens are all looking wonderful & growing like mad Nancy. Its lovely to see the greenery as our leaves fall to the ground over here & the cold weather sets in. Poor Coco .... first the plants, then the grandies.

Hi Julie, Thank you! Us gardeners look forward all year to these days. Enjoy your cooler days while we enjoy our warmer ones. It is wonderful how God has planned the different seasons! Take care! Nancy

I so enjoyed your post. All the beautiful things you are growing. Well done it is all so neat and tidy. We wouldn't be without our little fur buddies would we but they can sure cause havoc in the garden LOL

Your garden is looking so nice. I love it all. We have a small veggie garden planted and it now has a good stand to it. Now we are getting so much rain that I am praying for it not to drown. We have dug a trench so hopefully that will help. But, nothing like fresh rain water to make all things beautiful. Love the picture of your sweet grand. I have always wanted to try my hand at strawberries. I need to read up on that. Hope you have a great day. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Hi Creations By Cindy, Thank you! We had a two or three days of really high humidity and heat. Couldn't stand to go out hardly. Then this morning was nie but this afternoon it rained really hard and the wind blew so some of my pants split. Hope they bounce back. I am new to trying to grow strawberries in a raised bed on legs. Give it a go on strawberries. Hope they do well for you. Nancy

Hi Nancy, boy for not living in your new home that long, you certainly have a remarkable garden. I'm amazed:) I planted the four beans that you sent and three have come up, but they are not doing that good. m
Maybe they just need a little hotter weather. Our weather has been so nice, but not as hot as normal . . . it is refreshing though and so enjoyable for being outside.
Happy gardening sweet friend.
Connie :)

Wow you have so much stuff in your little space it is impressive! Poor lilies! I love my lilies, I have red ones and they are all around my house! I brought them from the old house!I bet your yard long beans will recover and there is plenty of time to plant more if you want! I just planted some red Chinese yard longs.

Hi Connie, My comments don't come in to my e-mail any more for some reason but I try to check often to see if there are any new ones. I hope your beans start a growth spurt. Seems like the ones I planted early indoors are not growing but the one seed I planted in the same pot seems to be doing better. Maybe about 12 inches tall. Sure hope I am successful and can save more seed. Nancy

Hi Shawn Ann, Thank you. It is so nice to see your posting again. I wish I could have brought more starts from our other house! I seem to be able to grow perennials better than vegetables and fruit! It is good therapy anyway! Nancy

Nancy your thumb gets greener every year. I am amazed at how much you have planted in such a short time. You haven't even lived there a year yet, have you? I love that hanging asparagus, it looks so airy and light, very pretty. I enjoyed seeing your strawberries, too. Just last night we were talking about planting strawberries next year.
In the comment you left on my blog, you asked where I put those chairs. I sold them. A few years ago I was painting chairs and selling them as fast as I could paint them, LOL. I guess it was more like 15 or so years ago. I put them in a little shop down town and she was always calling me asking for more. The shop is closed now, or I would probably still be painting them :)
Have a sweet week.
Connie :)

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Connie, Thanks for telling me about the chairs. What a great hobby! We have lived here a year and a half now. Second year trying to Courtyard Garden! We buy lots of strawberries for the freezer but it is nice to be able to pick a few fresh from the garden! You should try them! Nancy

Progress in the Courtyard!

It was so nice to look out my bedroom window this morning and see the Clematis blooming instead of a pile of snow.  It is a rainy day agai...
