Weekly Harvest, Peas, Questions, Graduation

My harvest is much the same but a little more of it.  I am enjoying it soooo much!!

Pulled up some more radishes!  When it gets hot I can't seem to grow them so will enjoy while I can!

Cut some oregano to dry.  Will be cutting more if it ever stops being rainy!

My couple patches of lettuce are so nice now.  I was so impatient for them to grow but finally..........!

My peas are growing.  But so are the weeds! I am so far behind!

The comfrey is blooming and I am planning to try making some comfrey fertilizer tea.

All is not well!!!  I planted my tomatoes out and the next day some of the leaves on this plant and a couple on another plant looked like this.  What is my problem?  Not hardened off properly, too hot, too cold, or I planted them with epson salts and crushed egg shells.  Could the epson salts have been too strong for those two plants???? All the leaves were not like this.  Will they be okay?????

Another problem!  All these Iris bloomed last year.  This year only a few in the front bloomed.  Does that mean they need transplanting and thinning?  Help!

We planted this pretty bush in the rose bush circle a few years ago.  Now it has almost gotten too large but I think it is so pretty!

I planted this last year.  This year it is so pretty and I just love it.  Wish I had another one!

I have the deck filled with pots this year.  I kind of like the looks but will see if I like maintaining them!

Brag time!!  Gracie graduated kindergarten!  Here are a couple pictures of her and then a little video of her program.  It looks like learning was so much fun!  She had a wonderful teacher.  We all think she is growing up too fast!  Does anyone else feel that way about their grandchildren?!? Enjoy and have a wonderful Memorial Day remembering the people who have protected our country in the past and the ones who are protecting it now.

Sunburn maybe? It would be my guess for something that happened that quickly on the first day of planting out. I've never used epsom salts so have no clue if that could do it or not.

Off hand, I'd agree with Daphne that it's sunburn. Windburn can do the same.

Leaf sunburn looks like silvery patches, which soon turn crisp. The plant suffers because of the loss of leaves. It will recover, but your harvest will be delayed.

Always harden off seedlings before planting outside. The general pattern is a 1/2 hour of direct sunlight per day for 2 days, then 1 hour for 2 days, then 1 1/2 hours for 2 days, etc., until you reach a full day.

It takes about two weeks to harden off a seedling.

Hi Daphne, I think maybe you are right. Annie*s Granny thought that too. I tried to harden them off but maybe didn't do it enough or just right. Will try to do better next year! Since then I have noticed the basil which I started and the pepper plants I bought are starting to show the same signs. Woe is me! Thank you for the info and for visiting! Nancy

Hi Annie*s Granny, You and Daphne are probably correct. I tried to harden them off but don't think I did it long enough or correctly. We sometimes have wind too. Learned my lesson I hope and will do better next year! Thanks for the information on how to do it and for visiting. Is a day 8 hours? Nancy

That does look like a sunburn, but the plant will recover. You should transplant irises to give them enough space to spread and flower.

Hi Jenny, Thanks for the encouragement that maybe my plants will survive! I will transplant my irises this fall I guess. I read you transplant plants that bloom in the spring in the fall and plants that bloom in the fall in the spring. Work to do!!! Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Hi Bama Girl, Thanks! I don't know what is going on with the plants but now other things have it too and I noticed other people having the same problem! Crazy weather is driving me crazy too! Glad you could visit! Nancy

Gracie is so cute, goodness we never had anything like a kindergarten graduation! Your garden looks great I bet the lettuce tastes wonderful. I can't help you with plant questions though, I have no green thumb! I just love to look and eat!

Thanks Polka Dot Closet, Yes, things are sure different than when we went to school. From her program it looked like learning was so much fun and they learn so much more in Kindergarten than what they use to! Not sure I have a green thumb but love trying! Thanks for stopping by! Nancy

Looks like your harvests are picking up nicely! I hope your tomato plant recovers nicely, I am sure it will be just fine after some time adjusting!

Your harvests look so beautiful and delicious. Particularly those radishes! Gracie is a cutie. You are blessed to be such an active part of her life. She is blessed too. Good luck with your garden. I've about quit starting seeds early and have direct sown the past 2 years, coupled with the volunteers that return.... like the tomatoes this year. I'm miserable at transitioning the seedlings into the garden.... kill 'em every time. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Shawn Ann, Thanks for the encouragement! A lot of my things do not look good but still hoping! Enjoying the greens now and radishes! Thanks for stopping by. Nancy

Hi Lisa, Thank you. Yes, we are blessed to live close to the two youngest grandchildren. We didn't have that privilege with the older ones. I don't grow much from seeds either! Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Children do grow as fast as your garden and need a lot of tending. Grace sure looks happy. Your garden talk is over my head.:):) I love learning though.
You asked if Tipton was near Valpo...We are 20 miles south of Kokomo, just off hwy 31. xoxo,Susie

Lucky you, to live close to the grand-children. Mine will be visiting in one more week and I am over the moon. Your radishes look like something out of a gardening catalog...just beautiful. Sorry you are having problems with the tomatoes. My 3 tomato plants are doing great but my squash and basil are doing nothing....hmmmm. xo

Hi Lynn,
We live close to some of the grandchildren but some are in VA and MD!! I hope my garden perks up as lots of things are not doing well! So glad that you could visit! Nancy

Jennifer said...

Just found your site and found a picture of tomato plants that look just like mine! Is there any treatment for sunburn or will the plants bounce back on their own? Thanks, Jen

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Jennifer, I am sorry I can't be of much help to you. One blogger said they would bounce back but then I see a lot of my plants have it so don't really know if it is sunburn as it has not gotten higher than 80's here and even my swiss chard had it which I already had planted earlier in the year and was well developed. We have had a lot of rain and the weather goes up and down. Gardening is a puzzle this year. I keep hoping! I am glad you could visit and wish I could be of more help. Come again. Nancy

Hi Little Miss Maggie, I think it is great that you kept your girls diplomas from kindergarten! It is a special time but also bittersweet! Come by again! Nancy

Hi Nancy. I know you have had several comments - I think sunburn. That hardening off is so important, but I also know how up and down your weather has been all around. Your lettuce is so wonderful looking. I will dream of planting it again when our summer cools down! Your oregano will be wonderful dried. Love seeing your comfrey that is in bloom and all your other beautiful things.

hi nancy,
great harvest. all my salad and radishes is gone ....but for the snail was that a delicious meal.
have a nice time,

Hi emilysincerely, I just don't know if it is sunburn or not as my swiss chard that was growing well all along started getting it too. I don't think our temp has been out of the 80's and didn't think we had a frost but maybe we did. Or like you say the weather has been up and down and lots of rain! Thanks for commenting. Please come again! Nancy

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Home and Garden, Sorry about your salad and radishes! I am not sure how long I will be able to grow radishes as it seems like I can only grow them for awhile in the spring. Thank you for visiting and commenting. Come again. Nancy

You're already getting wonderful produce from your garden! I'm more and more into potted flowers too, but like you said, it's probably more maintenance keeping them watered in the heat.
Gracie is sooo sweet!!

Hi chateau chic, Thank you for visiting! I will see how well I do at keeping these pots watered!! I thought maybe having them all in one spot would help? Come again! Nancy
