July 29th Report!

We took the cover off the beans.  Oh, my, they fell all over out of the box.  I wondered how we would ever get the cover back on!  My "Wonderful Gardener" said it would be like stuffing a fat lady in a girdle!

Here are the beans I harvested from there.  Not a very large harvest I would say.

We had to come up with a way to keep that little brown blob on the left from eating the rest of the beans!

We cobbled up a fence around the beans with lattice and some wire fence.  Not good enough!  Brown blob pulled out the beans through the wire fencing and then started crawling in through some spaces she would squeeze through.  Good thing we love brown blog a lot!

Lettuce, a couple small cabbages, dug a few potatoes , picked one cucumber and a few cherry tomatoes.

Green beans, three tomatoes, lots of cherry and sungold tomatoes and one cucumber!

Most of the tops of my onions were brown so I pulled them and hung on the trellis for the nice sunny day we had to dry.  Brought them into the garage at night to finish drying because rain was forecast.  So far we got a teeny bit of rain one time.  We need it so badly!  My onions were small this year.

Little swiss chard, potato, a few cherry and sungold tomatoes, red raspberries and a few blackberries.  Red raspberries are finished now!  Boo hoo.  Should be more in the fall if we get some rain.

I was gifted a garden journal!  Do you think there is any hope of my being organized???????

This ugly bug was on the screen over my cabbage.  Could someone please tell me what kind of bug this is and what damage he does?

My pizza dough rising in a bowl I had gotten at a garage sale years ago for 50 cents.  I love this bowl and use it whenever I make bread!

Another picking of blackberries.  I am freezing up the ones that don't get ate to have enough to make a batch of blackberry jam or jelly.

See it!!!!  I have one on my dill!  "It's a good thing"!!

My lovely new art work created by Gracie!  That is our house and the different colors in the background are spray painted lawn chairs!  I think they would look nice in our gardens, don't you!!

"Wonderful Gardener" took me for a day out!  We explored Valparaiso which is not too far from us.  I found this cup and saucer at a thrift shop.  It was not an expensive one but I thought it was pretty!  We also went to the chocolate factory, and I got some candy!  I will not post a picture of that!!!

You are getting a nice and varied harvest! I think you need to plant a special garden just for your brown blob. My brown blob and my black blob are being kept out of the garden now, as they love to dig up the newly dug and manured beds. I found a bit of a cow pie under the dining room table....that is a real no-no :-)

Hi Annie*s Granny, Thanks for the encouragement! Oh, my! Cow pie under the dining room table! Perhaps your blobs have my blob beat in the naughty department? LOL Nancy

Lovely harvest, especially berries!

That bug is a Green June beetle - loves fresh fruit but not going to say no to other veggies. Not as bad as japanise beetle, but also not a good thing for your garden.

Thanks Jenny! Glad to know what that bug is! I wonder why he has decided to visit me this year! Hope his visit is short! Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Lovely harvest. I like to make sure I have enough dill for my caterpillars. Though this year I accidentally picked some dill with their residents. I had to transfer them to other plants. At least the black swallowtail doesn't eat me out of house and home like the cabbage butterfly does.

Hi Daphne, Yes, I like the caterpillars much better than the cabbage butterflys! I should have planted more dill as so far I have only seen one caterpillar! Thanks for commenting! Nancy

Your bean plants are beautiful! And green beans too. :) All your garden goodies look delicious. Looks like some sort of beetle wants a bite of cabbage! I love the smell of homemade pizza dough. We have used this recipe the last few times http://www.food.com/recipe/beths-pizza-crust-13546 It turns out great and doesn't have to rise. Gracie did a lovely job on her picture. I think the cup and saucer are pretty too!

Have a great week, Nancy!

Hi vicki, Thanks! Gardening has been a little discouraging this year but thankful to get what we do! That pizza dough recipe looks good and easy. Can I bake it on just a pizza pan or do I have to have something special to bake it on? Glad you could visit! Nancy

Hi, Nancy! Yes, a pizza pan is fine and I have also used cookie sheets.

Nancy your harvests this week look wonderful to me! I had to laugh reading about your little brown blob. It's so funny he likes green beans! That bowl you use for bread dough is gorgeous, what a steal you got!

Hi nutmeg gardener, Thanks for the encouragement but I am not getting a lot of things to preserve yet. Coco likes almost any kind of veggie she can get including yellow summer squash! Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Hi Nancy! Your harvests look delicious! Because of all the rain we've had, the weeds have taken over my garden! I can't get to the few tomatoes and raspberries I have due to chiggers and biting nats, so I let the hubs do it for me. He got some chiggers, but immediately removed them with tape. Wished I'd thought of that! So funny your puppy loves to get into the beans! At least she's not digging holes! The bread bowl is nice! Thanks for sharing your veggies with us! Blessings from Bama!

Hi Felecia, Thanks! We finally got some rain this morning! A blessing! It is much needed. Coco not only loves beans but almost all veggies. Thanks for visiting! Nancy

Goodness, you are a virtual farmers market, your veges look wonderful, what great onions! Now, I have a question for the gardener, how does he know what it is like to stuff a fat lady into a girdle lol!!

Lots of lovely stuff going on around your house! Hope you can contain your beans. I have had some of those ugly bugs too. They look worse than japanese beetles! What a great gardening book! Lovely. Love you dough bowl too! I have been making pizza dough in my bread maker on the dough cycle since I got it for Christmas. Pizza stone too, love it! We've had such good homemade pizzas. You have a lot of good stuff growing!

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Shawn Ann, Well, the bugs didn't get the rest of my beans but Coco kept getting into them. Our fence was not doggie proof! I don't have a bread machine or a pizza stone. Wonder if I would like a pizza stone? Thanks for commenting! Nancy

We don't grow any vegetables yet, but now that I am retired, next spring we will do some planting. I need to read up because we have opossums and raccoons along with our cats and dog.

Those string beans look scrumptious - my favorite.

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Art and Sand, I know you will enjoy growing fresh veggies! We don't have opossums and raccoons to deal with here but our dog loves veggies and is a pain sometimes! Thank you for taking the time to visit! Nancy

I guess every gardener has pests of some sort to deal with. At least that caterpillar turns into something beautiful, unlike the tomato horn worm. Those things can devour a plant in no time.

We don't have as many June bugs now; when I was a child they were all over the wild blackberries and over ripe peaches. As little children, we played with them by tying a string around one back leg and letting them fly in circles.

Hi lil red hen, I found another June bug in my cabbage box today but I got him out! That is interesting how you played with them when you were a child! I fed the lambs, loved on the calves and played with my dog! Had never noticed a June bug before! Thanks for commenting! Nancy

Progress in the Courtyard!

It was so nice to look out my bedroom window this morning and see the Clematis blooming instead of a pile of snow.  It is a rainy day agai...
