Lettuce, Pruning, Birthday & Coffee Grounds

This will be the second cutting of this Cut and Come again lettuce.  It had to be moved out from under the Grow Lights to make room for newly planted seeds to go out in the garden.

Hmmmm.  Let me think!  How should I do this??  "Wonderful Gardener" pruned our fruit trees.  Sprayed them with Horticultural Oil today.  Hoping for some fruit this summer!!

"Wonderful Gardener" celebrated another birthday!  We are both older than dirt now!!!  Love the expression on Gracie's face.

And guess what this might be!  Coffee and tea grounds for my compost pile that I have been saving.  Grounds from one cup of coffee every morning does not add up very fast but waste not, want not!  Or so I have heard!!

I used to get coffee grounds from my husband's work, but he got tired of hauling them home all the time.

Hi Daphne, I know. Husbands have only so much patience in helping us it seems!! LOL Nancy

Already on your second cutting of lettuce? Nice! I've only just started some seeds a few days ago so will have to wait ...

Hi Susie, Nice to see you. It won't allow me to comment on your blog. Good luck on your seeds! Gardening time!! Nancy

I don't know if you have a coffee bar near you but here they will give their grounds to anyone that asks on a first come/first serve basis. xo Diana

Yummy salad greens - simply can't wait until I get to taste them again! I always throw our coffee grounds, filter & all, into our compost bowl; tea bags too.

That photo of your husband assessing the tree made me laugh because I think I will look exactly like that when I plant the fruit trees this spring & have to decide whether to hard prune them right away or not. I'm kind of dreading that moment.

Hi NanaDiana, I could probably fine a place to get coffee grounds but the problem is just getting out to do it. The days seem to be so full and we are homebodies. Nancy

Hi Margaret, Good luck on your pruning experience. We had never pruned them before except to cut a couple leaves off the peach tree just to balance it more. Sure hope we get some fruit this year and don't get a hard frost after they bud out. My compost pile is frozen in the winter! Nancy

Oh my, happy birthday to your Wonderful Gardener! Those birthdays have a bad habit of keeping on, keeping on, LOL Gracie is so pretty. And good job on the waste-not-want-not! I find myself scraping the plates for the compost. Better than down the drain!

Birthday wishes to your 'Wonderful Gardener'! So nice to have grow lights! The lettuces look yummy! Looks like the snow is melted! Hope there won't be any more! Our nectarine and peach trees have beautiful blooms! Since we have chickens and goats, I use their waste for my compost. Less mess in the kitchen. Sweet Gracie! Have a great week, Nancy! Blessings from Bama!

Hi Nancy ... your lettuce still looks yummy. So nice to have fresh lettuce all winter. I know you are anxious to dig in the dirt. Hope you have a wonderful garden this year.
Happy birthday to 'wonderful gardner'. Your Gracie is so cute.
Hope the trouble with you emailing is all cleared up by now.

Hi Leigh, Thanks! I didn't think about scraping the plates in the compost but when we are done there is not much to scrape!!! Nancy

Hi Vicki, Hoping we both get lots of yummy fruit this year from our trees. With the up and down weather it makes me wonder though! Nancy

Hi Felecia, Thanks! Our snow is pretty much gone and we had a couple days of nice weather but cold again now. Wish it would warm up and stay and not go up and down and tease us! Nancy

Hi Audrey, Thanks! It has been a nice experiment growing lettuce in the house but I don't have a large enough set up to produce enough for us. Nancy

Happy belated Birthday to your Wonderful Gardener! What a sweet, sweet candlelight picture of your husband and granddaughter. You grow the best lettuce! We save our coffee and tea grinds too. I buy the unbleached filters and throw the whole thing in the compost bucket to take to the compost bin. Makes great compost, with less waste.

Hi Lisa, Thanks! I don't make very good compost as we don't turn it often but we get some anyway! Nancy

Progress in the Courtyard!

It was so nice to look out my bedroom window this morning and see the Clematis blooming instead of a pile of snow.  It is a rainy day agai...
