The Last of August

Now this cucumber starts to grow after not having success with them all summer!

I don't usually have much success trying to grow radishes in the fall time but thought I would try once again!  If you are successful what is your secret????

Picking a few strawberries but they are kind of sour.  What is the problem??  Guess I need to go to google!

We took a trip to Pt. Huron, MI where we use to live for a family reunion and stopped to see my brother.

I think this is a grasshopper.  I would say it is not a good bug to be in my garden!!

These are lemon cucumbers. I wasn't sure when to pick them.  Because of limited space I don't think I will grow them next year.  Have to pick and choose.

We received this Cactus Candy from a friend.  We think it tastes like the "chuckles" candy.

I made these yucky gluten free biscuits.  Having to eat gluten free is not fun but there are much worse things in life so I need to be thankful!

This is our adorable great-granddaughter Nora with her first piano!!   I played piano duets with a friend today and so enjoyed it.  I hope she grows up to love the piano as much as I and her Grandma does!  Seems strange to call our daughter Grandma!!

I bought one pot of Rudbeckia and we got it planted today.  It should spread and help fill in.

Mums were on sale so bought two pots, one yellow and one burgundy.   This one is still in the original container but got them both planted in the pots today.

Picked a few raspberries.  Might have gotten more if Coco had not knocked this clump of unripe ones off.

Now tell me, who could stay mad at this sweet innocent face!

I found this nice basket at the thrift store although I was looking for something else I didn't find!  My yarn for my knitting and crochet projects are resting in it now!  Time to relax!  Have a wonderful rest of the night!  See you next time!  Nancy

I like Rudbeckias; they seem like the perfect Fall flower.
Little Nora sure is a cutie. She may very well have inherited the talent for playing piano ( or any other instrument).

Hello Nancy, lots of interesting things in your blog tonight. I've never heard of lemon cucumbers. Your little Nora is sure a cutie. I hope she loves piano just like you. The candy looks interesting too. Have. Alovely weekend.
Blessings,
Betsy

That little Nora is cute as can be! I am always amazed at all that you grow in a small space. You are right about Coco's sweet face. I could not get mad at her either. My oldest daughter has to eat gluten free too.

Hi Nancy :) Your cucumbers are like mine. We did have one surpise big one the other day, but the rest of the plant is only just flowering...I don't think it'll make it though. I planted my radish seeds late April outside. I thought it would be too cold, but in June I had radishes in my container. I don't know what the secret is...but I did use a special blend of soil called a "seed and sprout starter"...maybe that was it I don't know. I used it for all my seedlings in the spring too and they flourished. And that's interesting about your strawberries being sour. I bought some "fall berries" at the market a week ago, and they were sour too!

Too bad about the gluten-free eating...I really don't envy you Nancy...I do hope you find some kind of yummy recipe, bread is a tough one to give up. When I did my gluten-free year, I had a very hard time finding anything that didn't get used for a hocky puck.

Awww....Coco has my Jack's eyes!!! I can NEVER stay mad at those little devils lol!

Great pictures. My cucumbers are finally starting to take off again as well. I guess they must like cooler weather.
So glad you got to visit with family - precious memories made.
I enjoyed all your lovely pictures.
Have a great day.

Well that little Nora is just simply beautiful. Oh I know you could eat her up! I have never seen a lemon cucumber. WOW! I would not have known what that was. I thought about planting a few radishes for Fall too and see how it goes. I planted some once for summer and did not do so well with them. My cucumbers for summer did not do well at all this year. I am getting ready to plant a few things myself. Hope you have good luck with your cucumbers. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Hi Granny Marigold, Thank you! We sure do think Nora is adorable. I had Rudbeckia at my other house and wish I could have gotten someone to share a started with me but now I have my own. They look so cheery in the fall. Nancy

Hi Betsy, Thanks! I did enjoy the week-end as we went to Pt. Huron and had a nice time with friends and family. Hope you are doing well now. Nancy

Hi Henny Penny, Thanks! At least I became allergic to gluten since getting older. Kind of aggravating at times. I am trying to grow as many things in my courtyard as possible but still give room for Coco to do her thing. Nancy

Hi Rain, I did get some spring radishes but I doubt I get any from these fall ones. The days are lovely and sure do seem like fall. I buy my gluten free bread. Sure does not taste like old fashioned homade but it is something! I think there are a lot more choices for gluten free than there use to be. Not always tasty and costs more! Nancy

Hi Cheryl Kimbley, I am glad you were able to enjoy the blog pictures. We are having some lovely fall like weather. I feel bad for the people in Texas suffering from all the rain. Not sure if I will get a cucumber from that plant or not! Nancy

Hi Creations by Cindy, Thanks! We love our little Nora! I am not sure if I will get anything from this cucumber plant or not but right now it looks healthy! Good luck on your fall planting! Nancy

You little Coco is so cute, there's no way you could stay mad at that sweet little face!!

Nora is so cute! And so is Coco. This spring I learned that radishes don't like too much nitrogen. I added a bunch of compost to the bed and got lots of radish leaves with no roots!

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Debbie - Mountain Mama, Thank you! Somehow these little furbabies capture are hearts, don't they! Nancy

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Leigh, Thanks! The spring planting did a little better than this fall one of radishes. I used an organic pro mix to fill my boxes and I don't remember where I added coffee grounds to soil. I will have to keep your nitrogen advice in mind when planting again in the spring! Nancy

Hi Nancy-looks like you are really keeping busy.
I agree-gluten free IS yucky, but..........there are indeed worse things in life.
I bought a couple of mums yesterday and smiled the whole time--it means FALL is on the way and I couldn't be happier to see this summer go! LOL!
Your great granddaughter is adorable .

I enjoyed my visit Nancy! I recently made some gluten free items for a tea and they turned out fine. Good luck!

So neat to see all the different fruits and vegetables you're able to grow!
My cucumbers started off well this year, but too much rain made them swell!

That Southwest Candy Sampler sounds interesting, I've never seen or heard of it before!

And both your granddaughter and Coco are adorable, I love the name Nora, so pretty!

Take care and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hi How Mama Saves, Thank you for visiting my blog!! I am sorry your cucumbers did not do well either. Maybe next year will be a better cucumber year for both of us. Come again! Nancy

Nancy you have been a busy girl! I want to thank you for the sweet birthday gift. I love it! Did you make it? You are so sweet to think of me:)

Hi Connie, I hope you had a great birthday! Yes, I made it. Thank you for sharing all your ideas and crafts on your blog! Nancy

Hello Nancy, your wee great grandie is just adorable with her little piano!! How special. I love your new thrifted basket too. That cactus candy was interesting, we have a very good friend & the name everyone calls him is Cactus, even though his name is actually Craig. Happy Week to you Nancy. Xx

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Julie, Thanks! We think our Nora is special! The new basket is a great place to put my yarn. With the handles I can carry it from room to room. That is interesting about your friend Cactus! Nancy

Thanks for sharing all the snippets of your life. My daughter in love is gluten intolerant. She says a lot of the replacement stuff is really awful, but has had some good success with mixes from Aldi's. She also makes some black bean brownies that are really good!

Nora is such a doll. Let's see Mozart started piano lessons at 3 right? :). Wouldn't it be sweet to someday play duets with your great granddaughter?!

I do like lemon cucumbers but have relegated them to the squash bales since they do flower so well (hopefully attracting pollinators to the squash blossoms). But you are right, I think if you can only grow one or two cucumbers, there are better varieties out there.

And that's the thing with thrift stores - I usually don't find what I need but do find things that I wasn't even looking for. It's always a surprise :)

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Cheri, Thanks! Having to go gluten free sometimes I long for something like a sweet bun! I hope my great granddaughter takes music lessons. Her grandma is a piano teacher and I was once also at one time. I will probably be too old or dead to play duets with her though! Nancy

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Margaret, Thanks for agreeing with me about what cucumbers I should try to grow next year. Maybe if I would go thrift shopping more often I would find what I want. But then I might also buy things I like but don't need! Nancy

Gloria said...

Hi Nancy, Boy, gardening sure is full of surprises isn't it. You plant but you don't every really know what's going to happen until it does. Thing I planted didn't do all that well but then I have some surprises that came up from my compost that are doing great! There must be a lesson in that somewhere. I still don't know about all this gluten free stuff. My daughter just found out she has allergies. So far, I have just stayed away from any flour products when she comes over but I guess I am going to have to figure it out at some point.

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Gloriade, You bet gardening is full of surprises. Some good and some bad! I resisted jumping on the gluten free wagon just because I wanted to but when the biopsy showed I was allergic to wheat, rye and barley I had no choice. Check Aldi's and Costco if you are looking for gluten free items. Nancy

Rudbeckias are such cheerful flowers at this end of the season.
Thank you for visiting my blog!

Cozy Thyme Cottage said...

Hi Elizabethd, Yes, I agree. I wish that they would bloom all summer and fall! Thanks for leaving a comment. Hope you will visit again! Nancy

I didn't know it was called rudbeckia. I learned a lot from your post today. Very interesting. Have a great Sunday.

Hi Patty Antie, Thanks! Sometimes I think my blog must be boring so glad you were able to get something out of it! Nancy

Progress in the Courtyard!

It was so nice to look out my bedroom window this morning and see the Clematis blooming instead of a pile of snow.  It is a rainy day agai...
