June 27th 2018

I am going to start off my blog today with my beautiful Hollyhock blooms!  They are just gorgeous I think and I just love, love that color!

But I HATE battling these rust spots.  I have been using neem on them but don't think I started soon enough and I cut some of the leaves off as want good air circulations.  I need to look up my recipe for dish soap and water to spray on things!  What do you other gardeners use to battle this?  I do love Hollyhocks!

The sun is so hot on my veggies so I am battling sunscald by covering with muslin, cheese cloth or a sheet.  It has really helped!  I call it my rag garden.

I have harvested green beans a couple of times.  I steam them and they are so good.  Nothing like fresh green beans from the garden.  Yum!

I made up three batches of pesto from my basil for the freezer.  That is all I am doing for this year.  Have just a few left from last year.

We managed to get our buckets of strawberries done up for the freezer.  Just about done us in but we do love our strawberries in the winter.  For those of you that know I have been struggling with constant fatigue the endocrinologist says it is from my parathyroid but he said it was not bad enough to operate and no med for it.  Take multivitamin and Vitamin D and come back in six months!!  That was not very encouraging.  My thyroid and sugar are fine but I do have to eat gluten free and have celiac disease.

Our little great granddaughter, Nora eating a dill pickle! Gracie, Cali (granddaughters) and Nora all love dill pickles and eat them like candy when they come over!

My wonderful husband of 58 years brought me this darling planter for our anniversary!  Can anyone tell me what the three different plants are?  The tag just gave light and watering instructions!  When should I transplant them in separate pots?

Here is another picture of it showing the darling ladybug that came with it.  It also shows two of the plants a little better if anyone can tell me what they are.

I picked some lavender to dry.  I thought it looked pretty in this vase but hung it up to dry better.  Need to get out and pick more before it is too late.

My one lily is blooming.  Such a pretty color.  The other lily is doing nothing yet!

Picked my first sungold tomato today.  Hard to see but sungold tomatoes are yellow.  Yum!

My Bachelor Button seeds I planted are starting to bloom.  I think they are also called cornflower.

My zucchini plant I am growing out front so Coco doesn't eat it has lots of blossoms but they are not opened up yet.  I think I will probably hand pollinate.  So should I just be patient and wait tell they open up?  I hope they don't shrivel of and die.  Oh, the worries of a gardener!  This is it for the June 27th, 2018 blog post!   I hope you enjoyed your visit!

Hi Cheryl, Thank you! I hope I get many more sungold tomatoes soon. I never realized before how much kids love dill pickles! You have a great rest of week! Nancy

I always used dishsoap and water for aphids on my roses but I don't remember the ratio. I hope someone can help you better than I. :-(

I'm so sorry that you aren't feeling well. It's so frustrating when told to wait 6 months before things are pursued. I've had that happen too. It feels like I am losing parts of my life while waiting.

That is a gorgeous bouquet. How sweet of your Hubby to get it for you. 58 years! That's wonderful Nancy! We'll celebrate 40 in September so you have us beat.

Your strawberries look really yummy. I miss having them in a garden bed. Maybe someday. Meanwhile my lavender is blooming beautifully. I would like to dry some too but I'm afraid it will be done blooming before we return home from Nebraska. Oh well. I would also like to try thinning it and giving some to friends. Do you know if that is possible or will it kill the plant? It's getting way to big for the area it's in.

I hope you have a lovely evening Nancy.
Blessings,
Betsy

Your holly hock is so pretty. Is that zucchini in a pot? Cute that the grandkids like dill pickles. I remember my kids hated them, of course I love them.

Hi Betty, Thank you! Yes, that is zucchini in a pot. Sure hope I get some zukes from it! I was surprised to find the grandkids like dill pickles so well! Have a great rest of week. Nancy

Hi Betsy, Thank you! I really must look up that soap recipe. Seems like bugs, worms, etc are bothering almost all the veggies. Yes, it gets to me sometimes waiting to get some help for this fatigue but I know you must have gone through the same thing with your back. Glad your doing better now. I don't know about dividing your lavender. Maybe you could google it. High heat warning tomorrow afternoon and Saturday for us. I must remember to get out first thing and cover things, check water and pick my lavender. All before leaving for the eye doctor by 10:30a.m. Enjoy your time away. Nancy

Good luck with your thyroid issues. I've had thyroid problems for about 15 years now and I haven't had much success in getting the problem stabilized. I'm currently reading a book called Cooking for Hormone Balance that is supposed to help with these problems.

Hi Nancy, Your Hollyhocks are a lovely colour. None of mine have opened yet BUT they also have the dreaded Rust. I looked it up and there's not too much one can do about it. Luckily the plants still bloom in spite of it.

If you look up a plant called KALANCHOE I think you'll find that it looks like the blooming red one in your beautiful new pot.

Happy 58th anniversary to you both. You're a few years ahead of us. We'll be celebrating 55 years in the Fall.

Happy anniversary! I have rust on some of the beans as well - I've never don't have a cure for that, I just let it run it's course. An your first Sungold!!! Yum, yum!! It will be a while yet until I have tomatoes to eat...can't wait!

Hi Angela, So nice to have you visit and comment. I don't have a thyroid issue but a parathyroid issue. It is not connected to the thyroid. There are four of them at the base of our neck. Evidently one of mine is not doing quite the job it should. Does that book say anything about cooking for parathyroids? Nancy

Hi Weekend-Windup, Thank you for your nice comment. Glad that you could visit and hope you will come back again. Yes, bugs, etc do make it a battle to garden but I keep trying! Nancy

Hi Vicki Horn, Good to see your comment. I bet your sheets over your blueberries look like cute little ghosts. Too bad it is not Halloween! Love the color of that Hollyhock. Hope I can keep it going! Nancy

Hi Margaret, Oh, the challenges of gardening! I think it will be awhile before I get anymore ripe tomatoes. I was lucky to get that one that early. I love it when I can grow my own even if they are only a few! Take care! Nancy

Everything in your garden looks great - except the rust spots! I have to agree with you that nothing is tastier than fresh picked steamed green beans. I'm sorry to hear about your fatigue though. No fun!

Hi Leigh, Thank you! Ush on the rust spots! Enjoying what little I can produce here in the courtyard. Sometimes a challenge so I am learning! Nancy

Hi Nancy, my hollyhocks are developing these spots too. Have you found anything that works? As for the comment you left on my blog. The flower in the baking power can is Verbena, they do very well around here but are an annual.
We are having a heat wave so I'm doing extra watering and trying to get my outdoor work done early in the day. I took a little trip down to Oregon and when I got back my plants where wilted and in need of a big drink. I sure don't want to loose anything now. We are just starting to enjoy the fruits of our labor :)
Have a sweet day.
Connie :)

Hi Connie, I love hollyhocks but it is a challenge battling the spots. I put neem on mine and cut off some of the leaves. Maybe helped just a little. So that is a Verbena. I think I have a couple verbena perennials and they are a lot bigger. Must be different kinds. Glad your garden is producing well. Nancy
