Harvest,Frost, Jelly & Ice Cream Cake

My harvest is kale and lettuces.  That will be all I will get from my garden now until next spring!

I am back from vacation and my lettuces in the cold frames live on!!  We got a frost the night before we left and I didn't expect it so didn't put the covers on!  And there was no one to put them on while I was gone.  I lucked out and still have my lettuces!

This is another little area I have planted.  I put a clear plastic box over this area with a brick to hold it down!

This is the Swiss Chard that I have not done anything with.  Most of it lives on so far and I haven't covered it.

I don't cover the Kale either and so far so good!

And a patch of Parsley that doesn't get covered!  We received a little snow late this afternoon and lake effect snow is forecast for tonight!

This is blackberry juice that I froze from our blackberries in our yard this summer to make blackberry jelly.

This is the blackberry jelly made up from the blackberry juice!

We got a lot of laughs out of this one!  I requested an ice cream cake for my birthday!  Love ice cream!  No one told us that we should get the cake out of the freezer a little ahead of time!  It was so hard to cut.  This is Sue holding it up with the knife and Bob with his hands under it in case it slipped off the knife!  The cake was delicious!

Hi Polka Dot Closet, Thanks for the birthday wish! I celebrated out east on vacation with some of the grandkids and then yesterday. Today on my birthday I worked! LOL Afraid I won't be getting much from the garden now until spring except greens but even that is nice. Thanks for commenting! Nancy

I did a huge harvest today to get things out of the garden before it all freezes. All I'll be picking now is some herbs and some Asian greens. Maybe a bit of broccoli. Not sure about that one though.

Hi Nancy! Happy Birthday! Your garden of greens are so pretty! Hard to believe they'll grow where it snows! Sounds like ya'll get a lot of snow! We get excited over a few flurries, which usually doesn't happen until January! I like ice cream cake too! I'll have to remember that for my birthday, next month. Have a great week! Blessings from Bama!

Hi Daphne, I guess it is that time of year for us gardeners when we will be missing all our fresh veggies! Nancy

Hi Felecia, Hoping I can keep the greens growing as long as possible! Just remember to take your ice cream cake out of the freezer a bit before trying to cut it! LOL Nancy

Wow, your lettuce, kale, and parsley still look great! Your jelly looks great too. We did not make any this year and we're really missing it! We love ice cream too. Quentin Jr. is enjoying some by the fire right now, lol! That is a hilarious picture of your cake.

Hi Audrey, Yes, that ice cream cake was really, really frozen. And here we were worried about it melting on the way home from picking it up! I am afraid it is slim picking for the veggies now. Nancy

Hi Lisa, Thank you! I had not made jelly in such a long time and it was nice to be able to wait to do it. Nancy

Hi vicki, Thanks! I know it is silly to eat ice cream in the winter when it is cold but I love ice cream! I had not made jelly in a long time! Nancy

Drats, late to the party. Happy belated birthday. Looks like you had a fun one! Yummo, blackberry jelly. I wish we could get blackberries to grow here. My father has two canes that he recently planted inside the garden gate and he's got them well covered in hopes of protecting them from the bitter cold and heavy snow that's coming. They grew so well on my grandparents' farm in northern WI, it's hard to believe that just 2hrs away from there, here in northern MN, we can't get them to take off. Got any secrets? Love to see you have lettuce. The only thing left in our garden are some golden beets that I've been procrastinating about digging up. Hopefully I'll get to them in the next day or so.

Hi Becky, I am sorry that you could not make it to the party! LOL I wish I could give you some of my blackberry runners. We keep digging them out. I only have two thornless bushes left and they produced a lot last year. I wish I would have gotten black raspberries instead as the blackberries are large and seedy. I have made pie from them and now the jelly. We are in NW IN and I don't cover them in the winter. Nancy

Happy Birthday. I never knew that about the ice cream cakes.

I freeze my berries in the summer and then make jam in the fall and winter when it isn't as hectic.

Have a wonderful day.

Progress in the Courtyard!

It was so nice to look out my bedroom window this morning and see the Clematis blooming instead of a pile of snow.  It is a rainy day agai...
